Children’s Dentistry From Your Dentists in Brampton

In order for your child to build and maintain healthy oral hygiene habits, it's vital that you not only care for their teeth before and after their first tooth comes in, but that you visit us to ensure that their oral health is monitored and professionally cared for. While you’re here, we’ll do everything we can to advise you on how to best brush and floss their teeth until they're able to do a careful and thorough job on their own.

How should I care for my baby or toddler’s teeth and gums?

To keep their mouth healthy, wipe their gums with a clean, damp washcloth, and when their teeth begin to push through, introduce a soft-bristled toothbrush with a tiny amount of toothpaste to provide the teeth with fluoride protection. Floss their teeth daily and provide them with a balanced diet that limits sugary snacks and drinks.

As your child grows, continue to help them brush and floss properly, making sure they're using gentle pressure and that they're reaching all surfaces of their teeth. When they're old enough to tie their own shoes, chances are they'll also be able to brush their own teeth effectively. Of course, you should still supervise their dental care routine occasionally to make sure they're doing a good job, but at this point, you can begin to back off and let them take charge of their own oral health.

How old should my baby or toddler be for their first visit the dentist?

It's recommended that children see a dentist by their first birthday, or within six months after their first tooth comes in – whichever comes first. After that, they should visit the dentist every six months for regularly scheduled check-ups and cleanings. This will help ensure their teeth are healthy and that they're developing good oral hygiene habits.

During these checkups, our dental professionals will clean your child's teeth and assess their risk for cavities and other problems. These appointments will also provide you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your child's oral health.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child's teeth or gums, please don't hesitate to call us. Our friendly and compassionate team will be happy to help you care for your child's oral health and answer any questions you may have!
